With the cooler weather and Autumn approaching fast , now is the time for a fall crop of leafy greens , that most folks attribute to early spring.
Some of the best for cool weather are :
1. Leaf Lettuce – Many varieties to chose from. Our favorites are Ruby Red and Black Seeded Simpson about 45 days to harvest.
2. Spinach- we prefer spinach in the fall of the year because of it’s tendency to bolt (go to seed) in hot weather. About 50 days to harvest.
3. Swiss Chard- A hardy leaf that has a mellow flavor and the rainbow variety looks great in an October salad. About 45-60 days to harvest.
4. Kale- Kale is one of the most popular leaf greens at the present time , Super high in protein and tastes divine. We like the Lacianato variety. About 55 days to harvest
These are 4 leafy greens you can plant in your garden now for a spectacular harvest in mid October to November. You can also incorporate beet, and turnip greens in your mix if you can catch them before a hard frost. You may have to cover your greens late in the season, if you expect a hard frost or freeze , but these 4 can handle a mild frost with no problems. Remember to go organic (much less insect pests in cool weather) and heirloom seeds.
Enjoy your fall garden just because it’s frosty out doesn’t mean your garden is done.
Peace and prosperity,
